Firefighter I

Firefighter I is the foundational level of professional firefighting, equipping individuals with the essential knowledge and skills to operate safely and effectively within a fire department. This level of training covers basic firefighting techniques, including fire behavior, hose handling, ladder operations, and search and rescue procedures. Firefighter I also emphasizes the importance of personal protective equipment (PPE) and its proper use, as well as the fundamentals of fireground organization and teamwork. Successfully completing Firefighter I training demonstrates a commitment to the profession and prepares individuals to work under the supervision of more experienced firefighters, contributing to the overall safety and effectiveness of fire suppression and rescue operations. Successful completion of the program includes achieving a minimum grade of 80% on the final exam and overall course grade, which qualifies students to take the State of Ohio Certification test to become certified as a firefighter.

The KTC Public Safety program is approved by the Ohio Department of Higher Education.  Our programs are accredited by the Ohio Department of Public Safety #OH116.  Applicants for the Public Safety programs must meet moral, ethical, and substance use policies of the Ohio Department of Safety (OAC 4765).

• Program Length: 160 hrs / 3.5 months
• Class Meets: Tues & Thurs / 6:00 pm - 10:00 pm and Saturday 8:00 am - 4:00 pm
• Location: Extension Campus
